Kobe Bryant cannot remember a day in his life that wasn’t punctuated by the sound of a bouncing basketball. A hoops junkie who prophesied his own stardom in toddlerhood, Kobe is the reason fans stopped raising an eyebrow when high-school stars skipped college and went directly to the pros. The first teenage guard to successfully translate his skills to the NBA, he pocketed three championship rings by his 24th birthday and continued to evolve into one of the best all-around players in the history of the game. Kobe Bryant was born on August 23, 1978 in Philadelphia. His parents, Joe and Pam, already had two girls, Sharia and Shaya. Kobe was their third and final child. Life in the Bryant family was not your normal everyday existence. Joe, a playground hoops legend from Philly’s John Bartram High School, was in the midst of a scattershot pro basketball career that took him to three different countries.
Kobe grew up eating, sleeping and breathing basketball. A year after his son was born, Joe was traded to San Diego. The Bryants loved being in sunny Southern California. Their neighbors were friendly, and rain rarely forced the kids inside. Kobe developed an intense love of hoops on the West Coast. By his third birthday, he was already telling people be would be an NBA star.

In the summer of 1982, the Bryants packed their bags for Houston, after Joe was dealt to the Rockets. Kobe, who was gaining a better understanding of what his dad did for a living, started following the NBA seriously. His favorite player was Magic Johnson, a point guard in a power forward’s body—not unlike Kobe’s dad. The youngster responded to Magic’s flashy style and winning ways, and adopted the Lakers as his favorite pro team.
Joe’s stay in Houston lasted only one season. When the Rockets didn’t renew his contract, he signed with a team in Rieti, Italy. The Bryant family’s basketball odyssey continued. For Kobe and his sisters, the move proved to be a meaningful bonding experience. Stuck in a foreign country and unable to speak the language, they relied on each other to get by. Every day after school they practiced new Italian words and phrases together. Within a couple of months, all three were fairly fluent in Italian.

Joe, meanwhile, finally hit his stride in the pro ranks. Encouraged to use all the talents and instincts he developed on the streets of Philadelphia, he blossomed into a star. Joe regularly poured in 30 to 40 points a game. He made a very good salary, and his family was treated well by the people in their town. What many NBA fans thought of as basketball hell was its own slice of basketball heaven for the Bryants.


Kobe’s world revolved around his father’s basketball schedule. He often accompanied Joe to afternoon practice and rarely missed a game. Kobe studied his dad’s moves, then tried to mimic the way he played. At halftime of games, Kobe sometimes entertained fans by shooting baskets.

This lifestyle—particularly seeing his father thrill crowds with thunderous dunks and no-look passes—further inspired Kobe to dream of a career in the NBA. The soccer-crazed Italians, however, pushed Kobe in another direction. They told him more than once that with his long arms, quickness, and leaping ability, he would make a world-class goalkeeper.


Kobe kept tabs on the NBA thanks to his grandparents. In the days before international cable sports feeds, they recorded games and sent the tapes to Italy on a weekly basis. Father and son watched these videos together, as well as those Joe received from scouting services in the U.S. With Joe imparting his expertise, Kobe learned to see the whole court and read how the action unfolded during a game.

The Bryants spent the 1991-92 European season in France after Joe latched on with a new team. The move was hardest on Kobe and his sisters, who endured a two-hour roundtrip commute to an international school in Switzerland. Joe retired after the campaign ended, and he and Pam decided it was time for a permanent return to the U.S. Shaya and Sharia were thinking about college, and Kobe was ready to begin high school.

Life outside of hoops wasn’t quite as easy. A solid B student, Kobe struggled to find common ground with his classmates. In Europe he had been sheltered from many of the temptations and pressures faced by teenagers in the U.S. Naturally quiet and reserved, he got a crash-course in dealing with the daily dramas of high school hallways.


By his junior year, Kobe finally felt comfortable in his surroundings. He also began to make major strides in his hoops career. At 6-5, he decided his basketball future was probably in the backcourt and began to think and practice like a guard. This was fine by Lower Merion coach Gregg Downer, who liked the mismatches Kobe presented to opponents. In truth, between the expert advice the youngster received from his father and the competition he faced each year in Philadelphia’s top summer leagues, he would have been a handful for just about any high-school defender.


Kobe sizzled during the 1994-95 season. The junior averaged 31.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists and was named Pennsylvania Player of the Year. Kobe also unveiled his devastating cross-over dribble during the campaign. He learned the move from God Shammgod, a teammate on his summer AAU squad.


After Kobe’s breakout year, college recruiters from across the country came knocking. The soon-to-be senior boasted excellent grades and SAT scores, so academics would not be an obstacle. At the top of his list were Duke, North Carolina, Villanova and Michigan.


But when Chicago schoolboy Kevin Garnett went in the first round of the NBA Draft in June of 1995, Kobe began seriously considering moving directly to the pros. That summer, Joe arranged for his son to work out with members of the 76ers, and Kobe was awesome. He also made a big impression on scouts at the ABCD All-America Camp at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Kobe was ecstatic to join the Lakers. Not only was he starting his pro career with his favorite team, but he would not be expected to be its savior. In addition to Shaq, Los Angeles had exceptional talent, including Nick Van Exel, Elden Campbell, and Kobe’s old pal, Eddie Jones. An added bonus was coach Del Harris, who had been the head man in Houston for Joe Bryant’s one season there.


Kobe signed a three-year, $3.5 million contract with the Lakers, then averaged 25 points per game for their summer-league team. He bought a home in Pacific Palisades, Joe quit his job at La Salle, and the family moved out to California with him.

When Kobe joined the Lakers as a rookie, he asked the coaching staff for tapes of all the league’s two-guards and went to school on their strengths and weaknesses. He studied all-time greats like Pete Maravich and personally sought out the top active players to solicit advice on how to hone his skills.


As he closes in on 30, his education is complete—there are no major weaknesses in his game. When he wants to score, he simply does. One-on-one, no one in the NBA can handle Kobe with any consistency. He explodes on his first step to the hoop, and his crossover dribble leaves most defenders flat-footed. He has extended his jump-shooting range past the three-point arc and is absolutely fearless in clutch situations. Kobe’s strength and body control are exceptional. What would count as awkward, off-balance heaves by other players are well within his repertoire.


Kobe’s skill as a playmaker has been revealed since Phil Jackson's return to the LA bench. In his Triangle Offense, Kobe passes as often as he shoots. On most nights he is not only the team's top scorer, but their number-one assist man, too.
On defense, Kobe is better than most of the NBA’s marquee players. When challenged, he can dig down and come up with key stops. At crunch time, opponents usually stay away from him.
As for Kobe’s leadership skills, they were put to the test after Shaquille O’Neal’s departure. The jury is out in terms of the results. Kobe has a sense of how to make his teammates better, but until the Lakers go deep into the playoffs again it is difficult to say to what extent he can elevate the game of those around him.

LeBron James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. His mother, Gloria James, was only 16 at the time. His biological father, Anthony McClelland, was an ex-con uninterested in being a parent. Gloria raised LeBron on her own, and to this day he goes by her last name.

Life was often a struggle for LeBron and his mother. Gloria battled personal problems during much of his childhood. Some of those were brought on by the death of her mother, who passed away when LeBron was an infant. Bouncing between retail and accounting jobs, Gloria was never able to land steady work, and she and LeBron moved from apartment to apartment. The pair got to know all the seedier neighborhoods of Akron, a city of more than 200,000 located less than a hour south of Cleveland.

Despite her failings, Gloria worked hard to be a loving mother and shield LeBron from the poverty and violence of the streets. This was no easy chore, and at times made her choice of boyfriends seem puzzling. When LeBron was two, she started dating Eddie Jackson. In and out of trouble with the law, he went to prison in 1990 for aggravated cocaine trafficking. (In 2002, he pled guilty to mortgage fraud and mail fraud.) Nevertheless LeBron formed a bond with Jackson, and Gloria liked having a man around who was willing to serve as a father figure. Her brothers, Terry and Curt, also helped out.

From an early age, LeBron showed tremendous instincts for basketball. Gloria gave him a miniature hoop and ball when he was an infant, and he amused himself for hours each day with the toys. LeBron also had the genes necessary to spawn a long-limbed basketball phenom. Though Gloria stands only 5-5, she has relatives who are much taller.

The strain of the Jameses’ nomadic lifestyle began to take its toll when LeBron entered elementary school. Embarrassed by his home life, he didn’t make friends easily. And thought he wanted to do well in school, focusing on his studies was difficult. He found an outlet for his emotions and intelligence in sports. Basketball and football were his favorites.

By now LeBron had developed into a superb athlete. In addition to his natural speed, quickness and strength, he could think his way around the court or gridiron. His hero was Michael Jordan, and he patterned his hoops game after his idol’s. LeBron liked taking it to the hole, as well as launching jumpers, but he took a special delight in distributing the basketball to his teammates.
In football, LeBron usually played receiver. He scored 19 touchdowns in six games in his first year of Pee Wee football. His coach was Frankie Walker, a man who would soon have a profound effect on his life. After the season ended, Walker began hearing stories that his young star, now a fourth-grader, was missing school on a regular basis. He soon discovered that LeBron had all but dropped out. Walker confronted Gloria, who admitted that her son needed a more stable living environment. They agreed that Lebron should move in with Walker and his family.

After 18 months of living separately from her son, Gloria took him back. But when financial problems arose, LeBron returned to the Walkers. Eventually they worked out an arrangement to help Gloria pay her rent. Walker and his wife wanted to ensure that LeBron always had a place in the Akron area he could call home.

It didn't take long for LeBron and his crew to gain recognition around Akron. They learned the fundamentals of basketball from Drambot and developed tremendous chemistry with one another. They lost a heartbreaker, 68-66, but LeBron was the big story with his sparkling play.

By then LeBron, Joyce, Cotton and McGee—the self-proclaimed "Fab Four"—had arrived at a decision. They were a package deal, and pledged to continue their hoops careers together. The foursome settled on Saint Vincent-Saint Mary High School, a parochial school in downtown Akron. Best known for its tradition of academic excellence, SVSM was about to establish a new legacy, with LeBron leading the way.

Before he hit the hardwood, LeBron buckled up his chin strap as a wideout for SVSM football coach Jay Brophy, a former NFL linebacker who spent time with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. With LeBron and Maverick Carter (his cousin and an all-state senior) headlining a talented team, the Fighting Irish posted a perfect 27-0 record and captured the state championship, the school’s first since 1984. LeBron averaged just under 20 points, shot better than 50 percent from the field and was among the team leaders in rebounds, assists and steals. His instincts were amazing considering his age, and he demonstrated that intangible quality of making everyone else on the court better. Rumor had it that IMG, the Cleveland-based representation firm, was already putting out feelers to him.

The summer after his freshman season saw LeBron continue to improve. But the biggest change came off the court, where he grew nearly four inches, to 6-7. LeBron now looked more like a man than a boy.

LeBron played another year of football at SVSM in the fall of 2000, racking up more than 700 yards receiving. He was named All-Ohio, but the Fighting Irish finished at a disappointing 4-6

For the year LeBron averaged 25.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. He also increased his proficiency from downtown, connecting on 39 percent of his treys. Named an All-American (along with the likes of Eddie Curry and Kwame Brown), LeBron became the first sophomore in Ohio history to be voted the state’s Mr. Basketball.

LeBron began the summer after his sophomore year in Colorado Springs at the USA Basketball Development Festival. The first underclassman ever invited to the camp, he broke the festival scoring record with 120 points in five games and was named MVP.

At his next stop, adidas’s ABCD Camp at Fairleigh-Dickinson University in New Jersey, LeBron officially arrived on the national scene. Going into the week, the player attracting the most attention was Lenny Cooke, a 6-8 forward from New York.

Cooke, who was planning to enter the NBA draft, was completely overshadowed by LeBron, who took control of the camp. With a camera crew from ESPN’s “The Life” following his every move and college and pro scouts looking on, he flashed his full offensive arsenal and played suffocating defense. But what blew away everyone were LeBron’s passing skills. Up until this point, most had labeled him the next Jordan. Now comparisons to Magic Johnson started.

Still, at times during the camp, LeBron seemed almost bored by the competition, and his focus wavered. It was when challenged that he shone brightest. He first turned heads in a featured game for underclassmen. The contest’s MVP, he tallied 22 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Later he matched up against Cooke in a showdown anticipated by everyone at the camp. Cooke tried to set the tone on an early possession, dribbling between his legs several times before nailing a 3-pointer. But LeBron got the last laugh. He hit for 24 points, held Cooke to just nine, and drilled a 25-footer at the buzzer to deliver a last-second victory.

After the ABCD camp, a rumor—floated in The New York Times and helped along a little by LeBron—surfaced that he was thinking of declaring himself eligible for the NBA draft after his junior season at SVSM. While he eventually denied the claim, it contributed to the growing legend of “King James." After running a feature on the 16-year-old, SLAM recruited him to pen a regular column for the hip-hop hoops magazine.

Meanwhile, Michael Jordan invited LeBron to join him in an exclusive workout, where he scrimmaged against the likes of Antoine Walker, Michael Finley, Juwan Howard and Penny Hardaway. LeBron struck up a friendship with Walker, a product of Chicago’s Mt. Carmel basketball factory, and still counts him among his most trusted advisors.

Next on LeBron's agenda were the 26th annual McDonald's All-American High School Boys Basketball Game at Gund Arena and the EA Sports Roundball Classic in Chicago. By playing in more than one all-star game, LeBron sealed his fate and made himself eligible for the NBA draft, which became known as the "LeBron Lottery."

Among the teams hoping for a lucky bounce of the ping-pong ball were Cleveland, Denver, Memphis and Toronto. If that was indeed the team’s strategy, it worked. Cleveland got the top pick and grabbed LeBron. Though his contract with the Cavs was slotted in by the league’s rookie salary structure, he had no worries about money. In fact, estimates put his endorsement deals (with the likes of Nike, Coca-Cola and Upper Deck) at $100 million.

After a stand-out career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jordan joined the NBA’s Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as one of the stars of the league, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. Tracy Lamar McGrady, Jr., was born on May 24, 1979 in Bartow, Florida. His mother, Melanise Williford, was just out of high school, and his father, while caring and interested in Tracy’s welfare, wasn’t an everyday part of his son’s life. In need of help, Melanise headed a short ways north to Auburndale, where her mother, Roberta, lived. The two women shared the responsibility of raising Tracy. Eventually he would call both “Mom.”

Auburndale—located between Tampa and Orlando, about 90 minutes from each—was a comfortable town of just 9,000 residents, most of whom were white. Tracy felt completely at ease there. An aunt anointed him with the nickname “Pumpkinhead,” and just about everyone in town referred to him that way. He and his friends bounced around a neighborhood known as the “Hill” as though they owned it.

Life could be rough in Auburndale. One of Tracy’s starkest childhood memories was the shooting death of a cousin’s boyfriend. The incident convinced him that he didn’t want to spend his adult years on the Hill.

Tracy’s family did not have a lot of money, but he grew up with everything he needed. Melanise commuted to Orlando every day to work as a chambermaid in a Disney World hotel. She kept her son clothed—no small task—and there was always plenty of his favorite food, spaghetti with Roberta’s sauce. Roberta helped out, too. She worked as a janitor, and dinner was often whatever she caught while fishing at a local pond. A cadre of relatives, meanwhile, made sure Tracy had lots of spending money come his birthday. He remembers receiving as much as $100 each year

Tracy discovered sports at an early age and proved to be a natural athlete. He was first drawn to baseball. Tall, thin, and wiry, he possessed a blazing fastball and could whip his bat throught the hitting zone with tremendous force. A Little League star in Auburndale, Tracy appeared headed for a career on the diamond until another round ball began to consume his life. He had played hoops all along, but didn’t get serious about the sport until Penny Hardaway joined the Orlando Magic, in the fall of 1993. The rookie did things on the court that Tracy had never seen before. Hardaway quickly became his hero, the youngster emulating every part of his game.

Early on it appeared that Tracy had made a wise decision. He devoted himself to an aggressive conditioning program and followed Hopkins’s instructions without so much as a peep. Player and coach grew closer, the two spending several nights a week watching NBA games together. The results of Tracy’s hard work and dedication were evident on the hardwood. Mount Zion twice beat Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy, annually one of the nation’s best teams, and climbed up USA Today’s Super 25 rankings. Tracy was the catalyst. Playing all five positions and averaging nearly a triple-double, he did it all for the Mighty Warriors, acting as a defensive stopper on one end and an unstoppable scorer on the other.

A McDonald’s All-American, Tracy led Mount Zion to the #2 ranking in the country, and was named national Player of the Year by USA Today and North Carolina’s Player of the Year by the Associated Press. His final numbers for 1996-97—27.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game—attracted the attention of every major college coach. After Odom, he was rated above other prep stars such as Shane Battier, Ron Artest and Marcus Fizer. Leaning toward Rick Pitino and Kentucky, Tracy seemed ready to commit to the Wildcats.

But then word filtered down from NBA super scout Marty Blake that he was being projected as a potential first-round pick by several pro teams. Tim Duncan and Keith Van Horn were the only clear-cut lottery picks—after that there were no impact players. When Smith and Hopkins both advised Tracy to skip college, he decided to try his luck in the draft.

Of the teams interested in Tracy, the Chicago Bulls appeared the most serious. GM Jerry Krause negotiated to send Scottie Pippen to the Vancouver Grizzlies for their selection, overall. But hours before the draft Michael Jordan nixed the deal, promising to retire if Pippen were traded.

That opened the door for several other teams, including the Toronto Raptors, who also had their eye of Tracy. Two years earlier, GM Isiah Thomas, hoping to land Kevin Garnett, had outlined a plan of attack to bring along a high school phenom. Now he dusted off the blueprint in anticipation of selecting Tracy. When the 18 year old was passed over by the first eight clubs in the draft (Duncan and Van Horn went 1-2), Toronto grabbed him. Tracy consulted with Hopkins and Smith, who agreed that at least one of two would stay with him throughout his rookie campaign. The NBA rookie salary structure took all the intrigue out of contract talks with the Raptors, while Smith used his contacts to arrange a sweet deal with adidas, which paid Tracy $12 million over six years.

Thomas was praised in most circles for his efforts to build a winner in Toronto. With Damon Stoudamire and Marcus Camby already on the roster, he had assembled the makings of a talented nucleus that might one day challenge for the NBA title. Tracy seemed to fit perfectly into this picture. As it turned out, however, his first year as a pro was a nightmare, as was the 1997-98 season for the Raptors.

The problems started early for Toronto when injuries to Camby, Carlos Rogers, Popeye Jones and Walt Williams decimated the frontline. Coach Darrell Walker quickly lost control of the team, and Toronto won just two of its first 24 games, dropping 17 in a row at one point. Eventually, Thomas jumped ship, accepting a life raft with NBC as an announcer, and Walker was fired and replaced by Butch Carter. Meanwhile, a couple of February blockbuster deals sent Stoudamire, Rogers, Williams and Jones packing. In their stead arrived Alvin Williams, Gary Trent, Chauncey Billups, and Dee Brown, among others. Suddenly the youngest club in the NBA, the Raptors bungled their way through the rest of the campaign, finishing at 16-66. Among the few bright spots on the team were Camby, who demonstrated All-Star ability when healthy, and swingman Doug Christie, who began to mature into a solid scorer.

Tracy watched most of the misery from the bench. First, he landed in Walker’s doghouse for what was interpreted as a bad attitude. The coach criticized Tracy’s work ethic, telling some that the youngster wouldn’t last two years in the league, and almost never played him. When Carter took over, he used a more delicate touch with the rookie. The new coach sat down with Tracy and explained that he had to develop into an outstanding practice player before he could even think about being an NBA starter.

Carter’s stern-but-forgiving hand was just what Tracy needed. He called his coach “Uncle Butch,” and listened attentively to everything Carter said. By season’s end, Tracy was flashing his talent on a nightly basis. He also found an ally in Kobe Bryant. The two had become friendly by virtue of their membership in the NBA’s “Jumpa Straight From Prepa” fraternity. Bryant, in his second year with the Los Angeles Lakers, advised Tracy to seize opportunities in practice and games to impress the Raptors. That, he said, was all the organization wanted to see.

Tracy had already stirred some controversy when he told the media he deserved to see the floor at least 30 minutes a game. The Toronto front office didn’t appreciate him popping off, especially since his game still needed honing. Consistency was his biggest flaw. The Raptors couldn’t count on him for the same effort and production every night. Until they could, he would remain the club’s sixth man.

By the end of February, Coach Carter had to make room in the starting five for Tracy. With him, Vince, and Doug Christie teaming up, the Raptors presented matchup problems for everyone they faced. Toronto won 11 of its first 13 with Tracy as a starter. He pulled down 15 rebounds against Chicago and blocked seven shots against Houston. At season’s end, his average in every significant category—15.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.91 blocks and 1.14 steals—represented a career-high.

After the playoff loss, it was time for Tracy to start thinking about his future NBA home. Elton Brand of the Bulls tried to persuade him to go to Chicago, but he was uninterested in a rebuilding team. Tracy ruled out the Raptors, too—partly because they fired coach Carter. The two teams in hottest pursuit were the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat. Joining either would also allow Tracy to return to his home state and reunite with family and friends. During his three years in Toronto, he had often bankrolled relatives and childhood buddies on extended visits, but he relished the idea of seeing these familiar faces on a regular basis. Heat center Alonzo Mourning gave him a compelling sales pitch for the Miami organization, but Orlando coach Doc Rivers was even more convincing.

Rivers had taken the reins a year earlier and guided an undermanned team to a surprising .500 finish. He charmed Tracy with a mix of intelligence, warmth, humor and no-nonsense basketball philosophy. The second-year coach promised to put the ball in his hands in late-game situations and concocted a hybrid position similar to Scottie Pippen’s during Chicago’s championship years. In a sign-and-trade deal between Toronto and Orlando that netted him $93 million over seven years, Tracy joined the Magic and claimed uniform #1, the number Penny Hardaway had once worn.

Comparisons to Scottie Pippen tell you a lot about Tracy’s talent. He is fantastically athletic and possesses a wonderful instinct for the game. There literally isn’t anything he can’t do—or can’t learn to do.

Tracy doesn’t have a classic jumper, but he has worked extremely hard to become accurate from the outside. Every year he has increased his range and proficiency from beyond the three-point arc. Closer to the hoop, he may attempt a wild shot on occasion, but he has such phenomenal body control that he often cans those shots or draws a whistle. And Tracy is developing into a clutch free-throw shooter—a crucial skill for a big-time go-to guy.

Too often in the early part of Tracy’s career he pouted and complained, partly because he is a hardnosed competitor. Given his youth, however, that had to be expected. As he gets older, Tracy will have to find a way to channel his desire to win into a more positive force. Teammates like him and are in awe of his ability. The final piece to the puzzle is to earn their respect as a leader
